Both films scored ten Oscar nominations each, with Steve McQueen's acclaimed drama 12 Years a Slave close behind with nine nods.
All three films landed recognition in the Best Picture category alongside Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and The Wolf of Wall Street.
David O Russell, Alfonso Cuarón, Alexander Payne, Steve McQueen and Martin Scorsese are all up for Best Director.
The Best Actor field features American Hustle's Christian Bale, Nebraska's Bruce Dern, The Wolf of Wall Street's Leonardo DiCaprio, Dallas Buyers Club's Matthew McConaughey and Chiwetel Ejiofor from 12 Years a Slave.
