'Arrow' exec on Black Canary debut: 'It has to be earned'

Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim has warned fans not to expect an appearance from Black Canary in the near future.

In the original DC Comics, Dinah 'Laurel' Lance - played by Katie Cassidy on Arrow - becomes the costumed adventurer Black Canary, but Guggenheim has insisted that the transition "has to be earned" on screen.

"The inciting incidents have to have dramatic reality to them," the show exec said at PaleyFest 2013. "We don't want to disservice Laurel or Oliver (Stephen Amell) by saying she could have a bad day, put on fishnets and start killing people."

However, series star Cassidy did reveal that the arrival of Laurel's mother (Alex Kingston) and the revelation that her long-lost sister is still alive will put a great deal of pressure on the young lawyer.

"She kind of gets sucked in by her mother a bit," the star explained. "Her mother also has a lot more information than you necessarily think."

Cassidy has previously said that she expects Laurel to transform into Black Canary as Arrow continues.

"I think as far as the Black Canary goes, it will probably happen very organically," the actress said last year. "I know that Laurel is very strong, very tough. She comes from a middle class family; her father's a cop; she knows how to fight."

Arrow is currently on mid-season hiatus and will return to The CW in the US and Sky1 in the UK next month.
